Outdoor Adventure amid Costa Rica’s Canyons, Rainforests, and Rivers

The conical Arenal Volcano rises more than a mile into the sky, towering above the surrounding rainforest, which teems with howler monkeys, coatis, and toucans. A four-day, three-night tour from Desafio Adventure Company leads adrenaline-spiking expeditions across mountain slopes, river rapids, and lush jungles in and around Arenal Volcano National Park. Each trip also includes local accommodations and Costa Rican cuisine.

Day 1: After touching down at the Juan Santamaría International Airport in San José, travelers meet up with drivers who whisk them through rolling hills toward the Volcano Lodge and Gardens. Each of the lodge’s rooms boasts a private terrace overlooking Arenal, and a welcome dinner includes equally stunning panoramic views. Rooms are allocated by availability, and though most Groupon purchasers will stay at Volcano Lodge and Gardens, some travelers will stay at one of thirteen other hotels: Arenal Volcano Inn, Los Lagos Hotel & Spa, Hotel Kokoro Arenal, Hotel Arenal Paraiso, Hotel La Pradera, Hotel Fortuna (free bike rental included), Arenal Manoa, San Bosco, Arenal Green, Casa Luna, Magic Mountain, or Villas Eco-Arenal.

Day 2: Come morning, travelers take to rolling rapids for a whitewater-rafting tour, choosing between the churning rapids of a Class 3–4 river or the gentler currents of a Class 2–3 river. Nature lovers, meanwhile, can relax on a laid-back safari float while snapping shots of crocodiles, sloths, and iguanas. The day concludes with a trip to a natural hot spring to steep weary muscles or bags of chamomile tea in bubbling pools.

Day 3 The outdoor adventure continues with a canyoneering tour in the mountains surrounding the volcano. Starting along the upper ridge of the Lost Canyon, experienced guides lead harnessed rappelling teams down six gushing waterfalls—some measuring up to 200 feet—as mists and rainbows rise from the roaring cascades. At midday, adventurers sit down for a scenic picnic at the canyon’s summit. Then, a zipline tour sends thrill-seekers soaring through dense rainforest canopy. Eleven cables connect 12 platforms overlooking Arenal Volcano and the expansive, shimmering surface of the Arenal River.

Day 4 Before heading to the airport or continuing their stay, travelers can take a scenic trip to Monteverde via boat, horseback, mountain bike, or by harnessing a team of landscape artists. Alternatively, those who opt for the route through Samara or Carrillo beach travel by way of raft or safari float.

for a four-day, three-night Weekend Warrior Adventure package for two, which includes:

Accommodations at Volcano Lodge and Gardens (or a similar hotel)

Three dinners, three breakfasts, and two lunches

Round-trip airport transfers to and from Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO)

Lost Canyon Adventures canyoneering tour

Entrance to natural hot springs

Whitewater-rafting tour or safari float

Rainforest canopy zipline tour

On an average day, you can expect to see 40 species of birds, sloth’s, three types of monkeys, caimans, ”Jesus Christ” lizards, bats, turtles, and iguanas! Located near the small town of Los Chiles, it’s 3 miles from the Nicaraguan border. The tour begins with a 90 minute drive in our air-conditioned bus through some of Costa Rica’s richest farmland. Following a 15-minute break in Los Chiles, you’ll board a comfortable covered boat on the Rio Frio area where you and your guide will enjoy 2.5 to 3 hours through the Rio Frio and Caño Negro area to get up close glimpses of many animals. Tour includes lunch.

Overview:

The Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge together with Rio Frio is a biologically humid area, one of Costa Rica’s richest areas of biological diversity. Here you can find a great variety of resident and migratory birds, three different species of monkeys, iguanas, sloths, turtles, and caimans.

The tour starts from the Arenal Volcano area at 7: 30 a.m. We will pick up all Nature Lovers from their hotels in a comfortable bus. It is a 1-½ hour drive to Los Chiles, a culturally mixed village that sits only 4-km from the Nicaraguan border. Here, the boat awaits our river adventure. The tour consists of a 4-hour floating safari through tropical rainforest, pastures, and marsh. An experienced bilingual (Spanish-English) guide will lead the tour, and we will bring you back to the hotels about 4 to 4:30 pm.

Some birds are residents in the area, and it is possible to see hundreds of them, especially during the dry season. There are Anhingas or Snake-birds (Anhinga anhinga), Wood Storks (Mycteria americana), and Roseate Spoonbills (Ajaia ajaja). It is possible to see the Spoonbills in small groups eating from the river surroundings. Jabirus (Jabiru mycteria) is the largest bird in Central America and very endangered. It can also be found in the Cano Negro area. The Olivaceous Cormorant (Palacrocorax olivaceus) makes its nest in Cano Negro, and it is the most populus bird in the refuge. Finally, Caño Negro has the largest colony of cormorants in all of Costa Rica.

Along the river, we can see howler monkeys (Alouata palliata), spider monkeys (Ateles geoffrogi), white-faced monkeys (Cebus capuccinus), three-toed sloth (Bradipus variegatus), reptiles such as the caimans (Caiman crocodilos), turtles, and Jesus Christ lizards (Basiliscus basiliscus) that walk on water!
