Top Dive Sites in Playa Hermosa
Playa Hermosa’s greatest dive sites have plenty to offer. Each of these extraordinary sites provides a unique underwater trip.
Bat Islands
The Bat Islands, often called “The Bats,” are one of the most popular dive sites in Costa Rica. Situated at the tip of Santa Rosa National Park, these remote islands extend far into the Pacific, offering ideal conditions for an unforgettable diving experience.
What makes the Bat Islands stand out? Here, you’ll encounter larger schools of fish, many pelagic species, and incredible visibility. You might also spot manta rays, whale sharks, sailfish, and more during your Bat Island dive trip. Often, divers also see humpback whales and turtles.
Catalina Islands
The Catalina Islands are an archipelago comprising around 20 small islands. During your Catalina Island dive trip, you’ll likely find giant Pacific Manta rays, southern stingrays, eagle rays, devil rays, cow-nosed rays, sea turtles, and white-tip sharks. But remember, that these encounters are not guaranteed.
The seasonal sightings are what sets the Catalina Islands apart, with Pacific Mantas visiting this cleaning station from November to April and majestic humpback whales gracing the waters in late January through February and late July through August.
Besides being accessible from Playa Flamingo, the Catalina Islands are also close to Playa del Coco, Hermosa, Playa Ocotal, Playa Panama, and Playa Tamarindo.
Tortuga
Tortuga has a special place in our hearts as one of our favorite scuba diving sites. Even though it may not be teeming with turtles, as the name suggests, it has something unique and endearing that makes it worthwhile.
As you swim into the depths of this dive site, you’ll find the turtle-shaped cement block that inspired its name resting at the bottom of the mooring line. This adds whimsy to your diving adventure and makes for a memorable photo.
Additionally, it is just a quick 10-minute boat ride from Playa Ocotal, which makes it not just an excellent scuba dive spot but also easy to get to.
Virador
Virador or “Turning Point” is a local diving site that’s worth exploring. This singular rock pinnacle, with dimensions reaching 20 feet on one side and 70 feet on the other.
As you explore Virador, you’ll be surrounded by a diverse marine community. The sea life includes horse-eye jacks, butterflyfish, grunts, sergeant majors, and a whole kaleidoscope of other schooling fish. You might even find the elusive and exquisite harlequin clown shrimp feeding on smooth, blue sea stars.
If you dive deeper at the north tip of the rock, you might encounter white-tip sharks, goliath groupers, and turtles along the sandy bottom.
What Is Marine Life Like in Playa Hermosa Waters?
Playa Hermosa’s marine life is filled with a variety of marine species, including sea turtles, sharks, rays, and tropical fish. This makes it an ideal destination for experienced divers and snorkelers.
