What to expect:
After being picked up at your hotel, your scenic drive to the Tempisque river will take you through towns with familiar names – Los Ángeles, Filadelfia, Santa Cruz – and past verdant papaya and melon fields.
A quick stop is made for a bathroom break and bottled beverages may be purchased to take on the boat with you before you embark on the Tempisque River trip.
An expert naturalist guide will explain all the facets of the park, a great oasis on the Guanacaste plains. The best bird watching for aquatic species is found right here, as the park is favored by migratory birds escaping the cold winters in North and South America. Look closely for the kingfishers, snowy egret, blue heron, and broad-billed heron as they are nocturnal and sleep in the bushes along the river bank. You may even see a few nesting scarlet macaws.
Listen for the howler monkeys and resident white-faced capuchin monkey as the boat captain puts you up close to the action. Crocodiles slide into the water with a splash or duck just below the surface as the boat approaches, and several varieties of bats hug the trunks of massive trees.
